Study on Basalt Rebar as an Effective Alternative to Traditional Rebar in Concrete Beams

2020-12-12

Basalt rebar used for concrete reinforcement is called Basalt Fiber Reinforced Plastic (BFRP). Determining how BFRP rebars' use in concrete structures differs from traditional concrete rebars and their limitations is essential. This article presents experimental results comparing a series of supported beams reinforced with BFRP rebar to reference beams reinforced with steel rebar.

The tested beams were made of C30/37 concrete and reinforced with 8mm diameter basalt rebar. Their tensile strength was evaluated by tensile strength assessment. The deflection and cracking behavior of the beams were analyzed.

The results showed that the load-deflection relationship of basalt-reinforced beams had different characteristics compared to traditionally reinforced beams, and the type and quality of anchorage significantly impacted the tensile process of basalt rebar.
